What are Bitcoins?

Bitcoin is a kind of electronic currency, created as well as held electronically. Not a single person regulates it. Bitcoins aren’t printed out, like dollars or perhaps euros, they’re made by humans, and increasingly more organisations, running computer systems everywhere across the planet, utilizing software programs that solves mathematical problems.

Watch the video below for a better understanding of what Bitcoin is.

Who created Bitcoin?

Bitcoin is the first implementation of a concept called "cryptocurrency", which has been first identified in 1998 by Wei Dai on the cypherpunks email list, proposing the notion of a completely new kind of money that utilizes cryptography to regulate its production and transactions, rather than a central authority. The first Bitcoin specification and evidence of principle was circulated in 2009 in a cryptography subscriber list by Satoshi Nakamoto. Satoshi abandoned the project in late 2010 without revealing much about himself. The community has since grown exponentially with a lot of developers working on Bitcoin.

What is a Satoshi?

A Satoshi is the smallest part of a Bitcoin which can currently be sent: 0.00000001 BTC, that is, a hundredth of a millionth BTC. In the foreseeable future, however, the protocol may be updated to make it possible for additional subdivisions, should they be needed.
